STUDIO
In 2011 I became interested in the subject of environmental portraits of artists in their studios. Having built several studios of my own over the years and participating for many years in annual Open Studio events, I had developed a fascination with how the space in which an artist makes their work can greatly influence their creativity.
So began a two year journey of visiting 50 practicing artists in Sonoma County, CA (where I was living at the time) and photographing them in their studios. Some studios were extremely modest, nothing more than a small table in the living room and a wall on which to pin up their work. Others were several thousand square foot standalone buildings filled with equipment and materials.
It was both one of the most challenging and rewarding art projects I have undertaken. It culminated in the publication of STUDIO: 50 Sonoma County Artists, a book of the portraits with essays from local art curators and educators, and a solo exhibition of all fifty portraits at the Sonoma County Museum of Art.
