3D Objects

I started thinking of ways to move from 2 to 3 dimensions with my art as a consequence of making objects to photography in my studio (see Carta, Metropolis and Paper Cuts in the Photography section) and of making hardbound books and portfolio boxes. Since that time I’ve explored 3 dimensional geometric constructions of the Platonic solids, pop-up paper architecture and the Japanese art forms of Kirigami and Ullagami. In many of these I incorporate my monotypes to make all or part of the objects, just as I have done when making books or boxes.

I’ve drawn inspiration and guidance from various artists and their books, such as Hedi Kyle’s The Art of the Fold, Paul Jackson’s Cut and Fold Techniques for Pop-Up Designers and Jon Allen’s Making Geometry.

I look forward to continuing my search for new ways to venture beyond what can be represented in a world limited to height and width.
